ARTSingapore 2009 showcases never-before exhibited works of
Singapore Pioneer Artist Cheong Soo Pieng
The 9th edition of the fair will feature a rare collection of works from his golden era
Singapore, September 07, 2009 – The 9th edition of the renowned Asian Contemporary Art Fair, ARTSingapore 2009 will host a collection of art by one of Singapore’s pioneer artists, Cheong Soo Pieng (1917 – 1983), a 1962 winner of Singapore’s Meritorious Service Medal for his contributions to the Singapore art scene and one of the most influential artists in Singapore.
Held from 9 to 12 October at Suntec Singapore, the annual fair will feature, for the first time anywhere, a collection of works from Cheong’s “Golden era”, the period in the 1950s and 60s where Cheong produced some of his most admired and influential work.
One of the five artists credited with pioneering the Nanyang art style, a blend of East and West in oil and ink in the “Nanyang” (South-seas) subject matter, Cheong’s signature depictions of Malay women, with their long limbs and large eyes, was inspired from a trip to Borneo during this period.
Chen Shen Po, Fair Director of ARTSingapore, said, “Cheong Soo Pieng is one of the most important artists in Singapore, and yet he is not as well known as his peers. Having taught for over 20 years at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and being recognised as the pioneer of the Nanyang art style, he has arguably influenced a generation of Singapore artists. I feel that displaying these works at ARTSingapore would give him due recognition not only in Singapore, but internationally as well.”
The collection, from Singapore’s ART-2 Gallery (Singapore), one of 55 exhibitors from all over the world at ARTSingapore 2009, will be one of the main highlights of the fair along with the “New Finds” section, which will feature 8 up-and-coming-artists and galleries.
Promoting Art through Conversations
In a celebration of Cheong Soo Pieng’s work, ARTSingapore will also be inviting a distinguished panel of curators and critics to speak about Cheong’s contribution to the Singapore art scene.
Chaired by Low Sze Wee, the Deputy Director (Curation & Collection) at the National Art Gallery of Singapore, the talk is one of a series of five talks held within ARTSingapore, titled “Art Conversations”, that brings together some of the world’s leading collectors, artists and experts on Asian Art to discuss and share their views on current topics on art. Other topics include insights into Art photography as well as how intellectual property law applies to artists and their works.

Collaboration with Renowned American Photo Fair PhotoArts Santa Fe
Asia International Photography Fair (AIPF), the region’s only platform for Contemporary Photography, has teamed up with leading American Photo Festival, PhotoArts Santa Fe, to feature, for the first time, 10 prominent photographers from Santa Fe New Mexico, USA. With this collaboration, featuring a wide spectrum of styles from the south-western landscape to the surreal, PhotoArts Santa Fe hopes to enhance New Mexico’s reputation as a photography destination and promote the City of Santa Fe as a photographic art centre.
The photographers from PhotoArts Santa Fe, including international names like Ward Russell, the cinematographer who shot “X-Files: The Movie” and cult favourite “The Last Boy Scout”, will be at the AIPF with a selection of their works.
Other photographers showing at AIPF including Sealey Brandt (Singapore) and Yuki Aoyama (Japan) both are rising stars in this arena.
Shen Po added, “We hope that with our large selection of art works, from photography to up-and-coming artists to historically-important works, will be able cater to the varied and discerning tastes of art collectors and enthusiasts all over Asia.”
